Free Mr. Tony! (And Here’s How To Do It)

At about the same time as WTEM ESPN980 decided that it would delay releasing its unabridged podcast of The Tony Kornheiser Show for twenty-four hours, David Pogue of the New York Times released his podcast and column spotlighting a little something called DAR.fm. What is it? Nothing less than a way that YOU can help free Mr. Tony, at least for yourself.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Go to http://dar.fm/ and sign up for a free account.
  2. Search for “The Tony Kornheiser Show.”
  3. Click on the red dot “record” button next to the search result.

If all goes well (and granted, that’s kind of a big “if”), you’ll get an email around noonish (Eastern time) saying that your show has been recorded.  You can then listen from DAR.fm’s website on your computer, download the files to your computer (the show will be broken up into overlapping segments of about 15 minutes each), or even play them through your mobile device using their app “AirBand”. Disclaimer: I haven’t actually gotten AirBand to work with the recorded shows, but in theory it’s supposed to.

To download the files onto your computer, either directly into iTunes or into a folder of your choosing, you will need to download and install MP3tunes.com’s LockerSync3 application.

This isn’t the most reliable service in the world.  After a few days, I’ve gotten pretty mixed results on what it’s downloaded.  Although testing yesterday’s show seemed to work just fine. Still, I would still subscribe to the Mothership’s abridged podcast as a backup. But this is the closest to a viable solution for time-shifting Mr. Tony on your own that I have found so far, and how I plan on consuming The Tony Kornheiser Show for the foreseeable future.

What’s the irony in all of this? Since it’s recording the whole show, you’ll be getting the ads. Sweet, sweet irony.

  1. Following your advice and trying this out. I’ve been listening to the mothership podcasts since the stupid move by WTEM.
